Whimshurst Generator

The Whimshurst generator is a high voltage electrostatic machine.
The disks are motor driven and counter rotate 0 to 3000 rpm.
The perspex disc has 48 brass collector plates which are effectively individual capacitors. As the discs start to rotate the friction from the collectors causes a charge to build up in each plate. This charge is collected at the sides and starts to build up to high voltages. The spheres help acculate charge and minimise loses.
A hot spark of 25-40mm is created at full speed. The disk also lights up with purple discharges. If the spark gap is increased then the spark transforms to fine sprays of purple streamers. Very interesting to watch but difficult to film.
